Fast Fish – Pioneers of Spain’s energy transition tells the story of the successful conversion of a former coal mine in the town of Mieres, Northern Spain, into a 100% renewable geothermal plant.
The Barredo mine closed in the mid 1990s leaving its owner, energy company Hunosa, needing to perennially pump surplus water from the mine to prevent it from flooding the town. Faced with this high cost burden, the company set about transforming the site to generate zero-carbon energy at a profit.
