Time and time again we see fossil fuels create conflict. To stand with Ukraine, ending Russian coal, oil, and fossil gas use is an urgent priority, and to safeguard peace and our climate for all, we have to end all fossil fuel use as soon as possible. Ending energy waste and focusing on energy savings is a critical short term step to cutting fossil fuel use now, that must be supported by a rapid transition to a fully renewables-based energy system.
Our live counter (source: CREA) shows that the EU member states are paying Russia an estimated 600 million Euro a day for fossil fuels since the war on Ukraine began. This is a huge sum of money being burned for energy. If an amount like this was spent on energy efficiency and farming free sunlight and wind, we could get off fossil fuels extremely fast.
With the IPCC’s dire update of climate science, there can be no more half measures. This is the moment for brave decisions on energy. We can allow no more citizens to be shelled because of fossil fuels, nor any person to face a dangerous and uncertain future due to inadequate action on climate change.
Renewable power and energy savings promote peace.
