Nilay Vardar

Nilay completed her studies in Journalism at Galatasaray University and holds a master’s degree in Disability Studies from the University of Istanbul. With a journalistic career spanning seven years, she contributed to the Bianet news website, focusing on environmental, urbanisation, and human rights issues. Prior to joining the Beyond Fossil Fuels campaign, Nilay worked as a Communications Officer at Greenpeace Turkey for four years, primarily concentrating on areas such as coal, plastic, ocean, and agriculture.

Over 13,000 people have signed a petition created by NGOs Friends of the Earth Scotland and 350.org, calling on the Scottish government to reject a proposed gas plant by energy company SSE and fossil fuel giant Equinor. If approved, the plant would be operational by 2027 and run for decades to come.

Romania’s Mintia gas-fired thermal power plant, slated to be the largest in the EU, is expected to come online in 2026. With its hefty €1.4 billion price tag, the plant will have a capacity of 1.7 GW.
